Pjesme za djecu

Što je drvo

iz knjiga Žablji sastanak (2005.) i Stihom kroz život (2010.)

Poems for children

What Is a Tree?

from the books The Frogs' Meeting (2005) and Through Life in Verse (2010)

Once my little daughter asked me:"Tell me, Daddy, what's a tree?"Let me tell you, child of mine:first, the trunk is what you see.

That's its body, you might say, from which all its roots will sprout;and on it the branches growthat strong winds toss all about.

On the branches leaves come out, which the gentle breeze blows through, and, my child, these are its lungs:it breathes just the way you do.

Kad proljetno sunce grane, svako drvo tad procvjetai opojni miris širi,što je ukras ovog svijeta.

When the sun of spring shines down, every tree blooms, full of grace, spreading heady scent aroundto adorn this earthly place.

Tada pčele cvijet oplode, iza cvijeta plod urodi,a s jeseni, kad sazori –najljepše je u prirodi.

Bees then pollinate the blossom, after blossom, fruit will grow, and in autumn, when it's ripened, nature has no finer show.

Druga inačica: „Pod krošnjom kestena“, 2010. Another version: “Under the Chestnut's Crown”, 2010

Kasnija prerada o kestenu, s istim strofama o drvu.

A later reworking about the chestnut tree, with the same stanzas about the tree.

Kesten, to je krasno drvo.Reći ću vam sada svima, bilo divlje il' pitomo, njega dvije vrste ima.

Chestnut is a lovely tree. Now I'll tell you, every one:be it wild or be it tame, there are two kinds, not just one.

Divljeg treba industrija,i oboje služe nečem'.

The sweet chestnut you can eat, whether boiled or roasted through;industry has need of wild ones:both have useful work to do.

Out in nature stands the chestnutjust like any other tree. Now I'll tell you, children, this:first, the trunk is what you see.

That's its body, you might say, from which all its roots will sprout;and on it the branches growthat strong winds toss all about.
