Jednom se ribiču,zvanom brza ruka,u šumi na panjuuhvatila štuka.
Once a fishermanwhom they called Quick Hand,on a stump in the woodscaught a pike, on dry land!
Na pašnjaku nekom- oh, tako mu groma!Upecao malogod sto kila soma!
On a pasture somewhere(by thunder, he swore!)he landed a small catfish,a hundred kilos, no more!
I još meni veli- to je bilo lani -da po Dravi plivajupečeni fazani.
And he tells me, too,(that was last year, mind)that pheasants swim the Drava,of the roasted kind!
Na potoku nekomkobac ribu lovi,pilićima dajeda ih bolje tovi.
By a brook somewherea hawk fishes all day,and feeds fish to the chicksto fatten them that way.
I lija se snašlarepom vodu tuca.Kada koka pije,da joj se ne štuca.
And the fox, so clever,whisks the water with her tail,so the hen, when she drinks,won't hiccup, without fail.
Janješce je malo- oh, tako mu muka! -Papčićima svojimzagrlilo vuka!
There's a little lamb(oh, what a sorry plight!)that with its tiny hooveshugged the wolf so tight!
A vuk mu se smiješii nježno mu tepa,miluje ga šapomod glave do repa.
And the wolf smiles at itand coos in its ear,strokes it with his pawfrom its head to its rear.
Kad sam došo kući,pričala mi djeca:iz vrapčjega gnijezdaizvukla su zeca.
When I got back home,the children had news to share:out of a sparrow's nestthey had pulled a hare!
Mislite li djecoda je bilo tako?Meni ove pričena lovačke liče!
Children, do you thinkthat it really was so?These stories, it's clear,sound like hunters' tales to my ear!
