Maza Kindergarten

from the books The Frogs' Meeting (2005) and Through Life in Verse (2010) · set to music

U parku kraj dvorcapružila se staza,tu je dječji vrtić,a zove se „MAZA“.

Here in the castle parka pathway stretches far;there's a kindergartencalled "MAZA": here we are!

U tom su vrtićuValpovčani mali, tete djecu učeda bi svašta znali.

In that kindergartenValpovo's small ones stay;aunties teach the childrenall sorts of things each day.

Skupile se jutrossve mamine maze,tu se lijepo igraju,na njih tete paze.

This morning, all have come, each Mummy's little dear;they play together nicelywith aunties watching near.

Igri i veseljuvrijeme brzo prođe,oko dva – tri satapo njih mama dođe.

Time flies by so quicklywith games and fun all round;at two or three o'clockMum comes, and home they're bound.

Translator's note. The kindergarten's anthem, set to music by Željka Pavošević and sung by its children. Maza means "pet" or "darling", and the kindergarten stands in the park by Valpovo's castle. "Mummy's little dear" in the third stanza is his pun on the name: mamine maze, "Mummy's pets".
