Valpovo nekada i sada
Valpovo, Then and Now
Through Valpovo the Karašica flows, dividing it in two along its way, into KURĐANI and ČAKANČANI,so an old record tells us to this day.
Settled close beside the castle walls,on the right bank the ČAKANCI would dwell;by the church, upon the left bank's shore,KURĐANI made their homes, and settled well.
Nekad davno u stara vremena,među njima sloge nije bilo.
Once, long ago, in old and distant times, between the two no concord held its sway;who knows how long the state of things went on,and none dreamed unity would come one day.
God forbid that, in the dead of night, some lad across the Karašica went, whichever of the two clans he was from,to see his own betrothed, on courting bent!
Beside the castle, a small bridge was built, that counted up its years from days untold;and so that folk through Valpovo could pass, the toll was paid here by the young and old.
A sada je sasvim nešto drugo.Vrijedni narod svoje njive radi.
But now things are entirely otherwise:the working people till their fields and plough;the town is rising in its loveliness,Valpovo's rebuilt from the ground up now.
It isn't split in two now, as before:a brother's love has bound its people fast;six bridges, rising proudly as they stand, draw those two parts into one whole at last.
Those quarrels of the old days are no more;it's only as a joke you'd hear folk saythat even love was once forbidden here:long gone, and only spoken of today.
