The Wedding Present

Polovicom osamdeset druge,u napetom ovom vijeku.Dom zdravlja se oženio, uzeo je apoteku.

In the middle of 'eighty-two,in this age of strain and stress, the Health Centre went and married:took the pharmacy, no less!

At the wedding celebration"Đuro Salaj", best man there, made a present of a busto the dear young married pair.

At the toast, the best man spoke:"Listen, groom, and hear me through:mind, for this fine gift from methere's some work you'll have to do!"

It was just a heap of ironleft from Babylon of yore;paint and seat-covers alonecost some millions, maybe more.

What good is this marvel, then?Health care needs a speedy car,not this rusty rattletrapthat an ox would beat by far.

Kada crkne prva pomoć,on će vozit bolesnika.

What it's for is plain to see, clear as day, and no mistake:when the ambulance conks out,it's the patients it will take.

U dvorištu Doma zdravlja, sad autobus gordo stoji.Preko dana mirno drijema,a po noći zvijezde broji.

In the Health Centre's courtyard nowstands the bus, the king of cars;all day long it calmly dozes, and at night it counts the stars.

Refren:

Refrain:

Hot meals? We couldn't give a fig:we ride around in a horse-drawn gig.

Valpovo, 14.11.1982.

Valpovo, November 14, 1982

Translator's note. A satire on the 1982 merger of the Valpovo Health Centre with the pharmacy. The "best man" (kum) is the firm Đuro Salaj, which gave the new institution a worn-out bus. In the refrain the gig stands for taljige, a light horse-drawn cart.
