Dear Miss Darija!

Imao sam razgovor s Vama,i to služben za potrebe moje.Divni glasić u uho se slio,kao slavne SIRENE da poje.

I had a conversation, Miss, of late,official, for some business I'd pursue;a lovely little voice flowed in my ear,as though the famous SIRENS' song came through.

Čuo sam Vas po Vašem govoru,kao ličnost nisam Vas vidio,po predivnom Vašem razgovoru,svu ljepotu o Vama sam snio.

I knew you only by the voice I heard;your face, in person, never came in view;but from your charming talk, each lovely word,I dreamed of all the loveliness of you.

Sada shvaćam stanje Odiseja,tko mu pjeva on nije vidiopoj SIRENA ugodno mu prijamakar vezan za katarku bio.

Now I can understand Odysseus' plight:who sang to him, he never got to see;the SIRENS' song still gave him sweet delight,though he was lashed fast to the mast at sea.

Ja Vas molim, gospođice sada,Vaša ličnost neka se ne ljuti.To je djelo mog pjesničkog rada,tu ljepotu samo pjesnik sluti.

I ask you now, dear Miss, with all my heart,do not be cross, or be annoyed with me;this is the work of my poetic art:such beauty only poets sense and see.

Translator's note. A thank-you for a pleasant official phone call. In Greek myth the Sirens lured sailors with their song; Odysseus had himself tied to the mast so that he could hear them safely.
