The Blue Adriatic Sways

from the book Through Life in Verse (2010)

In the old days people sang:"The blue Adriatic sways! In the warm sun of the summerthe working class takes holidays!"

With the money of that workerthe hotels were built, and more:playing fields and lovely beaches, all the heart is longing for.

Those who carry foreign moneywear the blue sea like a prize;while our worker, in his dreaming, sees the sea with sleeping eyes.

On TV he watches nowstrangers roaming far and wide;"When will I get to the sea?"asks the worker, deep inside.

Pensioners no longer knowif the Adriatic's still blue.Oh, if they could go back there:that would be the life they knew!

Summer sun scorches the sea,the hotels are full year-round,and on beaches, warming bums, only strangers and tycoons are found.

Translator's note. The opening quotes an old song about workers' seaside holidays; by the time of the poem the coast had become too dear for the people who built it.
