The Poets' Pleasures

from the book Through Life in Verse (2010)

Dv'je tisuće i nekoga ljeta,sa željom su pjesnici čekali, najsretnije nedjeljne trenutke,da bi svoje pjesme pročitali.

In the two-thousands, in a certain year, all the poets longed to have their shareof the happiest moments Sunday brought,so they could read their poems on the air.

Čekali su i sretni su bili, svi pjesnici Šokačkoga kraja,da se jave milozvučnim glasom:Amalija, Jasenka i Maja.

All the poets of Šokadijaused to wait with joy the whole week longtill Amalija, Jasenka and Majacame on air, their voices sweet as song.

Vukovar i radio Đakovo, pjesnicima zadovoljstvo dali, pružajući mogućnosti svima,da bi svoje pjesme pročitali.

Vukovar and Radio Đakovogave the poets pleasure, and a shareof opportunity to everyone,so they could read their poems on the air.

Tu se čuju pjesme svakojake.Netko možda svoj prvijenac čita?Uzbuđenje vrhunac dostiže,svatko čita srca ponosita.

All kinds of poems there are to be heard;is someone reading, maybe, his debut?Excitement rises to its very peak;each one, proud-hearted, reads his poem through.

Sa svih strana dične Slavonije, svojoj duši pjesnik maštu dade:O ljepoti, o bolu, o ratu, netko ljubav, netko svoje jade.

From every side of proud Slavoniathe poet let his soul's own fancy flow:of beauty, and of pain, and of the war,one wrote of love, and one his grief and woe.

Mnoge pjesme u eter poslane, vrijede kao riječ pjesnika slavnog.U tom kraju, mnogi časni pisci, rodiše se još vremena davnog.

Many a poem sent out on the airis worth as much as some famed poet's word;in that same region, many honoured writerswere born in days long gone, as we have heard.

Pjesnicima koji pjesme šalju, svoje pjesme, što radio prima,ja im želim uspjeha i sreće,neka ovo bude ponos svima.

To all the poets sending poems in,their very own, which radio stations air,I wish them all success and happiness:may this be pride for all of them to share.

Utihnule radio postaje,a pjesnici sad nemaju svojstva, razgaliti srca slušatelja,a ni sebi pružit zadovoljstva.

The radio stations all have fallen still, and now the poets have no way at allto gladden listeners' hearts, as once they did,nor give themselves some pleasure, great or small.

Eh, da može opet da se vrati, ono vrijeme pjesničkoga raja.Sa opojnim glasom da se jave:Amalija, Jasenka i Maja.

Ah, if only it could come back again, that poets' paradise we used to share, and Amalija, Jasenka and Majawith their enchanting voices came on air!
