Prigodne pjesme i posvete

Na poklon Osnovnoj školi Sopje

Occasional verse and dedications

A Gift to the Sopje Primary School

Našoj školi darujem tu knjigu, kao spomen mog djetinjstva znaci, kroz te pjesme ja ostavljam sebe, nek' je vide i budući đaci.

I give this book to our school to keep,a keepsake of my childhood, as a sign;in these poems here I leave myself behind:may future pupils see me in each line.

Let us slowly go back to the pastand see where our Sopje has its place, when its name was heard for the first time, and how far its summers we can trace.

On Podravina's plain beside the Drava, through the fields a road has made its way;it has joined the villages of that region:from Čađavica to Suhopolje they lay.

On that road that winds across the fieldsseveral larger villages were placed.Sopje has been here since ancient times:to the second century it's traced.

Lete ljeta, sela se razvila.Sopjani su ljudi vrijedni bili.Tisuću osamsto dvadeset šesteu Sopju su školu sagradili.

Years flew by, the villages grew bigger.Sopje's folk were diligent and true.In the year of eighteen twenty-sixthey built a school in Sopje, fine and new.

Years went by in glory, one by one;with its children, then, the school was strong:a hundred or so, and sometimes even more,in the school the pupils used to throng.

Brzo prođe vrijeme našoj školi:sto šezdeset i pet ljeta brojii mnoge je mudre glave dala,u zapisu školskom to postoji!

Quickly passed the time for our school:a hundred sixty-five years it can claim, and it's given many a wise head;the school's own records show the very same!

I remember still my childhood days:as a child in Sopje I once grew;forty-four and forty-five, those years, here in Sopje I saw my schooling through.

The old school had given what it could,so the people took it down for good, and in nineteen hundred ninety-onebuilt a modern school where once it stood.

Sad redovno nova prima đake,a djeca su sretna i vesela.Sopjana je to ponos i dika,a škola je ukras našeg sela.

Now the new one daily takes its pupils, and the children, happy, on their way;it's the pride and joy of Sopje's people, and the school adorns our village today.

I'd be glad if many, many peopleread this little piece I've set down here, for the poet, Benak Ivo, wrote itfor the Sopje that he holds so dear.

Translator's note. Sopje, in the Podravina lowland along the Drava, was his native village. Croatians often give the surname first, as in his signature "Benak Ivo".
