Krčenik je selo malo, dvjestotinjak kuća broji,na sjeveru Slavonije, mnogo ljeta tu postoji.

Krčenik's a little village, some two hundred houses strong,in the north of Slavonia;it has stood here summers long.

Došli ljudi iz Zagorja,kršne Like, Dalmacije.Krčili su šume tada, divne naše Slavonije.

People came here from Zagorje, rocky Lika, Dalmatia's shore, and they cleared the forests thenthat our fair Slavonia bore.

Godine su prolazile, mjesto šume, njive plodne.Krčenik su naselile, plemenite duše srodne.

Years went passing, never still;fertile fields replaced the wood;Krčenik they came to fill, kindred souls, noble and good.

Spojili su dva naselja:BURGIJAŠE i ZAGORSKI KRAJ.Okolinu pretvoriliu zemaljski pravi raj.

Burgijaši and Zagorski Kraj, two settlements they joined as one,and they turned the land around themto a true Eden 'neath the sun.

In this wondrous paradisepeople dreamed of happy days;children filled the village up,so a school they had to raise.

Obitelj je u tom krajubila plodna, vrlo jaka.U školi je znalo bitisto dvadeset malih đaka.

In that region, families werestrong and fruitful, children plenty;in the school there'd often belittle pupils, a hundred twenty.

From the day this school was founded, teaching there was skilled and sound;to the pride of its own villageit brought forth worthy folk, renowned.

In these modern times of oursdifferent rules hold sway today:eighteen pupils now it counts, just so it won't fade away.

Bridegrooms? Only in a story!Lads don't want to wed, and sonow the school stands bare and empty, and the village withers slow.

Kada svadba šorom krene, cijelo selo se veseli!A krštenje kad se desitaj trenutak svatko želi!

When a wedding takes the lane, all the village celebrates! And a christening, when it comes:that's the moment each awaits!

There's a local office too,and two little shops as well;and the asphalt decks the village, lights shine bright where people dwell.

Once a railway line ran here, and a station, where trains came;now with pride they write their street"Station Street": that is its name.

Tisuću i devetstote, sedamdesetoga ljeta, odlučili dični ljudida se gradi crkva sveta.

In the year of nineteen hundredseventy, with single voice, worthy people then decided:a holy church would be their choice.

So they set about their labourwith a burning, heartfelt aim:to erect a house of worshiphonouring Saint Michael's name.

Then a football pitch was builtby the people, side by side;in remembrance of their homelandthey named their club "Hajduk" with pride.

After every match is played,so that folk may feed their souls,at the "Kulen" or at "Šoša's"merrily they'll argue goals.

Translator's note. The village's name comes from krčiti, "to clear land", which is what its settlers did. Some of its settlers came from Dalmatia, and the football club, named in memory of that homeland, shares its name with Split's famous Hajduk; the "Kulen" and "Šoša" of the last stanza are local haunts.
