The Goat and the Seven Kids

from the book Through Life in Verse (2010)

Prodao sam kupus, Bogu hvala, kupus ode, al' koza ostala.

The cabbage sold, thank God! But please take note:the cabbage went, and left me with the goat.

About this goat, now let me tell you true:she's young, her first horns only just come through.

S pedigreom, rasna koza, prava, mlijeka daje k'o malena krava.

She's pure-bred, with a pedigree, I vow;she gives as much milk as a little cow.

Whoever buys her won't regret the day:she gives six litres of milk every day.

This goat is fertile, fruitful, listen here:she's pregnant three times over every year!

Svaki puta kada se ojari, ona meni blizance podari.

And every single time she kids, why, thenshe gives me twins, again and yet again.

Last summer she set a record, what a feat:she kidded seven little kids, complete!

A modest goat, she doesn't need a stall;a little shed's enough for her, that's all.

Just room enough to lay her head at restand eat her grass in peace: that suits her best.

U jelu i piću zahtjevna nije, piva neće, samo vodu pije.

In food and drink she's not a fussy dear:she only drinks plain water, won't touch beer!

Reći ću vam još jednu sitnicu;za nju tražim neku crkavicu.

I'll tell you one more trifle, if I may:a pittance is the price I'd have you pay.

Za tisuću eura ću dati,više vrijedi, morate priznati.

I'll let her go for a thousand euros flat;she's worth still more, you must admit to that.

It's true, no kidding, and it's not in fun:three little kids go with her, every one.

The goat may lie, the horn will never lie;call my phone number, if you'd like to buy.

Translator's note. A Radio burza verse ad, following an earlier one in which he sold his cabbage; the title plays on the fairy tale of the wolf and the seven young kids. "If the goat lies, the horn doesn't" is a Croatian proverb: a goat's horns tell her true age, so the facts speak for themselves.
