The Ethno House at Zelčin

from the book Through Life in Verse (2010)

Today I called in at the ethno housein Zelčin, Mira Varžić's, and the sighttook me straight back into my childhood days;my breast swelled wide with sweetness and delight.

Pod orahom djeda kosu kuje, baka užad plete pokraj kuće.Miris kruha dvorištem se širi, bit će danas i pogače vruće.

Beneath the walnut Grandpa peens his scythe, and Grandma plaits her ropes beside the wall;the smell of bread is spreading through the yard, today there'll be hot flatbread for us all.

Tu kolijevka stoji u buđaku,dične ljude ona je zibala, pokoljenja mnoga iznjedrila, dok im majka pjesmicu pjevala.

The cradle stands there in its corner nook,it rocked fine folk to sleep in days gone by,brought forth so many generations, whiletheir mother sang to them a lullaby.

The granary stands empty in the yard;it still recalls when it was rich and fine, when all its bins were brimming full of grain, and often it would treat a mouse to dine.

But time goes by the way an echo goes, and takes it all, forgotten, on its way;the combine reaps the golden ears of wheat, the silos now are full of grain today.

The empty barn dreams of the smell of hay, still bears the horses' whinny in its soul;the chaff-shed, leaning up against its side,is crumbling slowly, old, no longer whole.

Plug željezni i ornice stoje,u štaglju su kola rastavljena, odavno su odradili svoje, jer su prošla njihova vremena.

The iron plough and ploughing gear still stand, the wagon lies dismantled in the shed;long since they've done their work upon the land, because their time has passed, their day has fled.

Were I to tell of all that's here to see, then winter would have come, believe you me;so let the memory of my childhood daysstay in my dreams, where it is meant to be.

So many things are needed here no more, the times are different, and the old ways wane;now man goes walking on the Moon, and yetthis house, a keepsake, always will remain.

Translator's note. An "ethno house" is an old farmhouse kept with its original furnishings as a small folk museum; this one belongs to Mira Varžić of Zelčin, near Valpovo. The chaff-shed held the chaff left over from threshing.
