Kata Semialjac's Ethno House

Today I called on Kata Semialjacat her homestead in Zelčin, and I foundthe yard kept all in order, neat and trim, that lovely old-time house, the best around.

From far away it all looks fair to see,the fence has just been painted, fresh and bright. In nineteen hundred nineteen, in the summerof that year, the house first saw the light.

Step in her yard, and you can hardly tellif it's a dream, or if it's waking day. With flowers the whole house is decked, and herefor years has beauty slept its time away.

The kitchen is the same as long ago:the wife awaits her husband, dinner laid;before the meal the rakija must flow, then supper, and a soft bed ready made.

The bed within the bedroom dreams its dreams,in thought it calls its masters, calls in vain;it stands there sad, alone in solitude, and longs to give them dreams to dream again.

U dvorištu bunar bistre vode, pitku vodu ljudima je dao.Ambar prazan mnoga ljeta brojii miša je pogostiti znao.

Out in the yard, a well of water clearthat gave the folk good water, fresh and fine;the granary, long empty, counts the years, and knew the way to treat a mouse to dine.

Further on, the bread oven's gone to bed, that once knew how to bake the fine white bread;the young housewife was diligent and good, and with her flatbread kept the children fed.

Štala prazna, nema više konja, plug drveni i ornice stoje, vjetrenjača u štaglju miruje, vremena su učinila svoje.

The stable's empty, there's no horse at all,the wooden plough and ploughing gear stand still, the winnowing machine rests in the barn:the times have done their work, as all times will.

No horses now are harnessed to the cart, and nowhere can be heard a single neigh;the barn itself dreams of the hay's sweet smell, the tractors hum around the yard today.

Of many things there is no longer need, now modern times have come, the old have passed;but this will stay with us in memory, and as a treasured keepsake it will last.

Behind the barn, a loveliness so rare:the air is sweet, the fruit trees are in flower, the night is warm, the moonlight is divine, and all the stars have decked the evening hour.

Još se nađu dobre, zlatne ruke,i posao uredno se kreće,kad u vrtu sve radove srede, kupa šljive i rakiju peče.

Good golden hands are still here to be found, and all the work is done with care and skill;and when the garden chores are all in order, they pick plums and fire the rakija still.

And oh, how fine that garden then would be,if young hands tended it with loving care,if they would kiss and gather walnuts, too, caress the lonely beds still standing there.

Here in this paradise the storks have nested, and clatter out their joy through daylight hours, and those who give the beds a fond caressthey'll bring a baby, like a gift of flowers.

Translator's note. An "ethno house" is an old farmhouse kept with its original furnishings as a small folk museum; Kata Semialjac's is in Zelčin, near Valpovo. The winnower is a hand-cranked fanning mill for cleaning grain, and the storks are the ones that, in folk belief, bring babies.
Druga inačica: „Nastavak etno kuće Semialjac Kate Zelčin“, 2013. Another version: “Kata Semialjac's Ethno House in Zelčin, Continued”, 2013

Nastavak pjesme, napisan istoga dana na zasebnom listu; sve su njegove strofe dio cjelovite pjesme.

The continuation, written the same day on a separate sheet; all its stanzas are part of the complete poem.

Translator's note. A sequel to his poem about Kata Semialjac's ethno house in Zelčin, an old farmstead kept as a small museum of village life. All five stanzas also appear, word for word, in that poem, and are translated the same way.
