Dug dobili bez para ostali

Protest and society

Debt Repaid, and Still No Money

from the book Through Life in Verse (2010)

This poem was created, let me explain, when Sanader's Government began to reign. Now on TV we watch and hear it plain:our Government shouts out with might and mainthat part of what is owed it would repay,as it had promised on election day.But it is slow to keep the promise made:perhaps it's waiting till our numbers fade. For he who falls into eternal sleephas, by the law, no pension left to keep. This problem doesn't bother them one bit:in ten years' time or so, they'll settle it.The Finance Minister will loudly shout:"There is no money, that is clear, no doubt. Were we to pay the pension dues," he'll say,"the Government would find no wage to pay."Then, in a softer voice, it says to allit will write out solutions, great and small. To pay back pensioners the debt they're due,our Government is offering models: two.The first, just so you know the way it's laid:in two years' time, in four instalments paid. But lest we turn tycoons with all that cash,it fills its coffers up with half the stash.

Radili smo i zato smo krivi, blago onom tko sve to preživi.Još jedino sada starce tješi,dragi Bogo sve će to da riješi.

It wouldn't give us too much cash as yet:old hearts would give out from the shock they'd get.The Government has got our health in mind, and will resolve the promise it has signed. The second model runs like this instead:it all comes back when ten long years have fled. You've two years' grace to start with, so that stillthe Government can gather interest at will.So that the old get all that they are due,the Government pays in instalments, too.Oh, lucky us! There's nothing more to say:the debts will trickle, drop by drop, our way. It's all quite clear, there's no trick to be found:the old will get just crumbs to go around,so that no one, perhaps, will raise a cryto Saint Peter when he moves up on high. That's what the pensioners have got in store:the debt is paid, but cash? There is no more. While in the Government they seek the ways, the pensioners pass on to blissful days.We worked, and so the guilty ones are we;and lucky he who lives all this to see.The only thing that comforts old folk now:dear God himself will sort it out somehow.
