I've Had a Poem from Marica
Radi Mara i ugodno diše,pored posla i pjesmice piše.
The postman came to visit me one dayand brought a lovely letter on his way;I looked: the postmark said Čađavica, and so I knew it came from Marica.I read the letter, and it seemed to mea little like a poem it might be.Composed in good accord, it told me howour Mara's very busy working now:she's digging spuds, she's cooking jam, and more, tomatoes too, for better soup, in store, and for her dear ones in the house she'll layprovisions by for winter, stored away. It's known to all that women work a lot:in spring they plant all kinds in every plot. Then autumn comes, and nature turns to gold, and wives put up their stores against the cold.So Mara works, her breathing calm and light, and, next to all her work, finds verse to write.Let that work matter to you, as it should;a little fun along the way is good. And may it be your pride and joy to hold:it is the wish of poets, young and old, especially on stage, in public view:for poets, that's a glorious thing to do.I'll stop right here, that's all for now, my friend, until the next work that you write and send.I too have been at work in my own way:in Bazije I bought some plums one day,and now I watch the plums grow ripe, untilit's time to make rakija in the still. In Valpovo, the tenth day of September,in the year two thousand and thirteen.May your poetry grow rich and lush; remember:write, Mara, while your fancy's blooming green.
