The Little Cauldron of Belišće

from the book Through Life in Verse (2010)

Belišće, a lovely town,by the Drava you will find;it's a place of industry, making goods of every kind.

And the working class, we know, always held together tight, all the more if some occasionfor a party came in sight.

So the fête could feed its guests, some one thousand, give or take, they were burning with one wish:such a cauldron they would make!

Delač offered the idea,Borić saw the funding through, and the works' repair departmentbuilt a cauldron, all brand-new.

Dimenzije kotlića sukakve nećeš naći često:Metar visok, metar širok,a litara ima šesto!

And the cauldron's size is suchas you won't find everywhere:metre high and metre wide, and six hundred litres there!

So that they could set it, fullof its stew, above the fire, out of sturdy five-inch pipingthey built legs to hold it higher.

I taj ponos belišćanskišto litara ima šesto, paprikaše, grah, čobanacSlavonijom kuha često.

And this pride of all Belišće,all six hundred litres, too, often cooks across Slavoniapaprikaš, čobanac, bean stew.

A kuhar je Josip Delačšto čobanac kuha vješto,tek onda je prava slogakada kotlić skuha nešto.

And the cook is Josip Delač,who makes čobanac with skill;only then there's true accord, when the cauldron cooks its fill.

From that cauldron of great fame,on the Day of Belišće Town,President Mesić, Stevo, ategood beans with us, sitting down.

Poželimo tom kotlićuda mu grana mira cvjeta, nek' čobanac dobar kuhai nahrani pola svijeta!

Let us wish this cauldron well:may its peace-branch bloom and spread;may it cook a good čobanacand see half the world well fed!

Translator's note. Čobanac is the spicy Slavonian "shepherd's stew" of mixed meats, cooked outdoors in a kotlić, a cauldron over an open fire; Stjepan (Stevo) Mesić was President of Croatia from 2000 to 2010.
