Ujesen se svadbe praveuz obilje rujnog vina.Svaki otac raduje se,kada ženi svoga sina.

Autumn's when the weddings come, with red wine for everyone;every father's heart is gladwhen he marries off his son.

Those old customs folk had keptdown the ages, year by year:worthy people gathered roundto give love a hearty cheer.

At the supper, wedding guestsshowered gifts on bride and groom;after they had eaten well, toasts were drunk around the room.

A glazba bi svojim tonom, svu ljepotu svadbi dala,to veselje i ljepota,do zore bi potrajala.

And the music of the bandmade the wedding fine and bright;all that merriment and beautylasted on till morning light.

Then at last they'd set off home, parting happy on their way;of the beauty of that weddingthey'd be talking many a day.

But now things are not the same:no more beer, no wine to pour, and that merriment is gonethat we've known since days of yore.

Parliament has voted througha new law on traffic, soall the pleasures of a weddingnow are dreams of long ago.

Za večerom sad razmišljaš:Da li smiješ flašu tači?Jer idući autom kući,policajac će te naći.

At the supper now you wonder:dare you pour a glass or two?For as you drive home by car,a policeman's after you.

"Dobro jutro gospodine."Policajac će kazati."Jeste li večeras pili?Mi želimo sada znati."

"A good morning to you, sir,"so the officer will say."Have you had a drink tonight? We must know it right away."

When the breath test has its say,if you've had a drop, you'll mourn:you'd be better off, my brother, had you never once been born.

Vadi kune, kaznu platii vozačku moraš dati.U garaži bit će auto,šest mjeseci, moraš znati.

Out with kunas, fine to pay, hand your licence in today;in the garage sits your carsix whole months, and there to stay.

Even with my Sunday lunchI can't touch a drop, oh no;for I never get to knowwhen I'll need the car to go.

All the vintners of Croatiasend the Government a call:it should work with all its mightso the wine roads thrive for all.

For the sake of our young couples,so each wedding's lovely still, give us back the law we had:at least zero point five per mille!

Translator's note. Croatia's 2004 road-traffic law set a zero blood-alcohol limit for drivers. The poem asks for the old limit of 0.5 per mille (grams of alcohol per litre of blood) back.
